Devils betting lines explained

Here’s how the lines look for an average NHL hockey game:

Team Puck-Line Moneyline Total
New Jersey Devils +1.5 (-180) +120 Over 5.5 (-110)
New York Islanders -1.5 (+160) -140 Under 5.5 (-110)

nhl hockey betting nj sportsbooksThe three main hockey betting markets are the moneyline, the total, and the puck-line.

  • Moneyline: When betting on the moneyline, you are picking a team to win the game. The margin of victory does not matter. It doesn’t matter whether the game goes to overtime or not. In the above example, the Islanders are favorites to win the game. To profit $100 on the Islanders, you would need to risk $140. On the other side, a $100 bet on the Devils would net you a profit of $120.
  • Total: When betting the total, you’re betting whether the two teams in the game will combine to score more or less than the listed number of goals. In hockey, the total is almost always 5.5 goals but it can range from a flat 5 for two defensive teams to as high as 6.5 for two offensively gifted teams. Overtime goals count towards the total. If the game goes to a shootout, the winning team is awarded a goal but individual shootout goals do not count.
  • Puck-line: Puck-line betting is hockey’s version of the spread. There is not as much scoring as other sports like football or basketball, so the spread is almost always 1.5 goals. Hockey is a sport with a lot of variances, so even the worst teams in the league win a fair share of games. Betting on the favorite to cover the puck-line will usually be a plus-money underdog.

Devils live betting/prop betting

If the puck has dropped, it doesn’t mean it’s too late to bet on the Devils game. Live betting has taken the sports betting world by storm and there’s no easier way to live bet than through the app of your favorite sportsbook. With sports betting apps, you can bet while on the go from anywhere within the state of New Jersey. You can place a bet while at the supermarket, from the comfort of your couch, or stuck on the train getting home from work.

With live betting, the odds change based on what’s already happened in the game. If the Devils were underdogs to win the game before the game started, and they score first and take a 1-0 lead, the live odds for bets will likely now have them as favorites to win the game. Live betting provides great opportunities to capitalize when you think the oddsmakers have overreacted to what has happened.

Also, with live betting, there’s a variety of props you can bet on that involve the New Jersey Devils.

  • First period betting: You can bet on which team will have the lead after the first period. If you bet the Devils to win the first period and they lead 1-0 at the first intermission, you’ll win your bet even if they end up losing the game 4-1.
  • Who will be the Devils’ leading scorer: If you think Nico Hischier is going to have a big game for the Devils, you can bet on him to lead the team in scoring for that night. As long as he outscores guys like Jesper Bratt and Jack Hughes, your bet will be a winner.
  • First player to score: You can bet on which player you think will score the first goal in the game. The odds on this bet are high as it’s so random with so many variables. If you think an energy player on the 4th line breaks through early, you can get payouts as high as 30-1 at some sportsbooks. Even premier scorers will offer value at odds near 7-1 most nights.

Devils Vegas odds vs. online odds

Most sportsbooks odds align closely with the Vegas odds. The Vegas odds are what many consider the industry standard, as for a long time they were the only ones to create lines and odds. Sportsbooks across the country use similar methods to those in Vegas to try and create accurate lines to balance the action across their board.

One difference between Vegas odds and sportsbook odds in New Jersey would be for the home team. If a lot of people in New Jersey are betting on the Devils to win, the sportsbooks in the state might slightly adjust their odds and make them worse for the Devils. This is an attempt to attract bets on the other side of the game and limit their liability.

Devils schedule 2022-23

The New Jersey Devils play 82 games for the 2022-23 regular season between October 13 and April 13. The Devils will play 26 games against Metropolitan Division teams, 24 games against non-division Eastern Conference teams, and 32 games vs. Western Conference teams.

The top three teams in the division with up to two additional wild card teams, will make the NHL playoffs, which are scheduled to begin in early May.

Brief Devils history

The Devils were originally founded as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974. They then moved to Denver and became the Colorado Rockies in 1976. Finally, in 1982 the franchise moved to New Jersey.

John McMullen owned the team from 1982 through 2000. In 2000, YankeeNets (a combination of the New York Yankees and New Jersey Nets) bought the Devils. In 2004, the team was sold to Jeffrey Vanderbeek. Since 2013, the team has been owned by Josh Harris and David Blitzer.

The Devils had a borderline dynasty in the mid-1990s through the early 2000s. They made the playoffs in 21 of 24 seasons, winning three Stanley Cups under General Manager Lou Lamoriello.

Martin Brodeur was the goaltender for the Devils. Brodeur is arguably the best goalie in hockey history. Other key members of those teams include Patrik Elias, Scott Stevens, Scott Niedermayer, and Scott Gomez.

The championship Devils teams were often criticized for their boring style of hockey. The Devils perfected their defensive system, with most hockey fans accusing the Devils of playing “the trap.” Eliminating the trap and improving the speed of the game was one of the reasons for the NHL losing a full season to a lockout in 2004-05.

Here are the Devils leaders in some key categories:

  • Games Played: Ken Daneyko (1283)
  • Goals: Patrik Elias (408)
  • Assists: Patrik Elias (617)
  • Points: Patrik Elias (1025)
  • Wins: Martin Brodeur (688)
  • Saves: Martin Brodeur (28,776)
