How golf odds work
The first thing you need to know to bet on golf, obviously, is how to read the odds. When you first open up an NJ online sportsbook and visit the golf section to read the odds, you will likely see something like the following:
Example odds to win the Masters:
- Dustin Johnson: -150
- Jordan Spieth: +110
- Brooks Koepka: +500
What you want to look for here is the sign in front of the odds. If it's a minus sign, as it is with Johnson, that indicates the amount of money you'd bet to win $100. In this case, $150.
On the other hand, if it's a plus sign, as with the other two golfers, that tells you how much you'll win if you bet those golfers and they come through. In this case, you'd win $110 on Spieth if he won and $500 on Koepka.
You don't have to bet in those increments, but this gives you an idea of how the lines work.
Masters betting tips
Track the course’s history
The Masters Tournament is played at Augusta National Golf Club every year, so you can rely on course history to see how players perform there.
When you're betting on a golfer, make sure he has a strong track record on the course with either wins or close calls. You'll want to avoid players who have consistently struggled at Augusta.
Which players’ strengths play well to the course?
Somewhat of an extension of the first point, you'll want to have a good understanding of Augusta National Golf Club as certain types of skill sets play well to the course.
For example, Greens In Regulation tends to be an essential number as from 1994-2014, the winner at Augusta was in the Top 5 of that stat 14 times.
Over the years, they've extended the course, so it plays well to the big bombers off the tee like Johnson and Bubba Watson. Guys like Matt Kuchar and Jason Dufner, who don't drive the ball as well, are less likely to succeed on this long course.
Current form
One important factor to consider when betting on golf is the current form. Take a look at the players who are performing at a high level going into the event and make your pick from that crop. That could mean a number of wins or Top 10s heading into the event.
Betting on a player that has missed multiple cuts and is struggling is generally considered a risky proposition.

Top 5 golf bets
1. Outright
This type of bet allows you to pick who will win the Masters tournament. It's a risky bet as the player you choose has to win it all, but it also has the highest payout.
2. Top 5/Top 10
Another option is to bet on a player to finish in the Top 5 or the Top 10. This gives you a wider margin of victory, but your payout decreases a little bit.
3. Make the cut
This prop bet allows you to bet on whether a player will make or miss the cut.
4. Head-to-head betting
This type of bet pits two golfers against each other. Then you have to decide which of the two will have the lower score at the end of four rounds (and which golfer will finish better).
5. Live
If you're not interested in placing a bet before the tournament starts, you can also live bet the Masters. This gives you the opportunity to see the golfers play a round or two before you jump in and make your bet.
