It’s springtime, and as flowers continue to bloom across the United States, so, too, do online poker tournament series. With similar series happening on PokerStars‘ Pennsylvania and Michigan sites, PokerStars NJ likewise will bring back the New Jersey Spring Championship of Online Poker this month.
The series takes place May 8-24 and features a whopping 165 tournaments, the most in NJSCOOP history. Guaranteed prize pools total just over $1.2 million across all of those events, culminating in a $300 buy-in, two-day no-limit hold’em Main Event on May 23-24 with a $100,000 guarantee.
Variety of buy-ins, game types pack NJSCOOP schedule
PokerStars MI is hosting its first-ever MISCOOP in May as well, while the PASCOOP is currently hosting its second running of the series on PokerStars PA. By contrast, the NJSCOOP has been an annual event on PokerStars NJ since 2016, though this year’s sixth running will feature more tournaments than ever before.
Like other SCOOPs, the NJSCOOP offers players three different buy-ins or “tiers” for each scheduled event — “High,” “Medium,” and “Low.” With 55 events on the schedule, that adds up to 165 distinct tournaments over the 17 days.
Buy-ins for NJSCOOP events range from as low as $5 and $10 to a couple of $500 events. As usual, the great majority of events are no-limit hold’em. However, there are a few Omaha events peppered throughout the schedule as well, with both pot-limit Omaha and no-limit Omaha hi-lo represented.
The events exhibit the usual mix of formats, with tournaments featuring different table sizes, stack depths, and structures, as well as several progressive knockout bounty events. There is also a heads-up event (Event #4), for which the three different tiers of tournaments will play out on different days (May 8, 16, and 24).

- Event #2-H — $200 NLHE 8-Max, Progressive KO, Bigstack, $20K gtd. (May 8)
- Event #7-H — $500 NLHE, $15K gd. (May 9)
- Event #7-M — $200 NLHE 8-Max, Jersey Special, $35K gtd. (May 9)
- Event #29-H — $250 NLHE 8-Max, Half Price Jersey Special, High Roller, $15K gtd. (May 16)
- Event #29-M — $100 NLHE 8-Max, Half Price Jersey Special, $35K gtd. (May 16)
Because of its buy-in, the “Medium” version of Event #51 starting Sunday, May 23 has been designated as the NJSCOOP Main Event. Meanwhile, Event #51-L will serve as a “Main Event, Mini” and Event #51-H will be the series’ marquee high roller event:
- Event #51-H — $500 NLHE 8-Max, Jersey Special, High Roller, $20K gtd.
- Event #51-M — $300 NLHE 8-Max, Main Event – Mid, $100K gtd.
- Event #51-L — $50 NLHE 8-Max, Main Event, Mini, $10K gtd.
Satellites and freerolls throughout NJSCOOP
PokerStars NJ will run numerous satellites into NJSCOOP events throughout the series. There will also be freerolls providing players inexpensive ways to participate in events.
Throughout NJSCOOP there will be daily Second Chance Freerolls. Those who bust from NJSCOOP events without cashing will earn automatic entry into the next day’s Second Chance Freeroll. Each of these events awards $1,000 in NJSCOOP tournament tickets.
Additionally, there will be an NJSCOOP Depositor Freeroll on Sunday, May 23. Players depositing $30 or more between now and May 23 using the bonus code “NJSCOOP” will earn seats into the tournament. The top 50 finishers in the Depositor Freeroll win entry into the $300 Main Event (Event #51-M) later that day. The freeroll is therefore awarding $15,000 worth of tournament tickets.
Also, from now through May 23 PokerStars NJ is running special $3 Spin & Go’s in which players can also win Main Event entries.
PokerStars NJ hopes to improve on recent tournament series
Looking at other tournament series on the site this year, the PokerStars NJ Winter Series in January featured 40 tournaments with $500,000 in guarantees. Ultimately players won just over $640,000 in the series.
The PokerStars NJ Bounty Builder Series in February and March featured 58 tournaments and just over $650,000 in guarantees. players won almost $700,000 across all events.
More recently in early April, the New Jersey Classic was a one-off $500 buy-in event with a $100,000 guarantee. The tournament attracted 178 total entries. However that was about 35 entries shy of hitting the guarantee. As a result, there was an overlay of just over $16,000.
NJSCOOP may fare better for PokerStars NJ, although certainly won’t reach the heights of MISCOOP and PASCOOP, both of which should see players win over $2 million despite having fewer tournaments total (120 for each).
