Flyers betting lines explained

Below is an example of typical betting lines for the Flyers.

Team Moneyline Puck-line Total
Flyers -135 -1.5 (+160) Over 5.5 (-130)
Rangers +115 +1.5 (-180) Under 5.5 (+110)

The three main markets to bet on hockey are the moneyline, puck-line, and the over/under (total).

Hockey Betting Basics

Puck Line

The puck line is hockey’s version of spread betting. While basketball and football spreads vary based on the skill level of the teams involved in the game, the puck-line will almost always be 1.5. This is because hockey games are more random, low-scoring, and have a lower average margin-of-victory. Betting on a team to cover the puck-line is usually a plus-money proposition.

Moneyline

Moneyline: Betting on the moneyline simply means betting on the winner of the game. No matter how it’s done, if your moneyline bet wins the hockey game, your bet is a winner. In this example, Philadelphia is a -135 favorite. If you are looking to profit $100, you’d have to risk $135. A $100 wager on the Rangers would get you a $115 payout.

Over/Under (Totals)

Over/Under (Total): Similar to other sports, hockey allows totals betting. Just like the puck-line though, hockey’s total is pretty static. The total is almost always 5.5 goals. Two offensive teams might generate a total of 6.5, but that’s as high as it will go. Simply bet whether the two teams will combine to score over or under the number of goals listed in the total.

Flyers Vegas odds vs. online odds

Odds at sportsbooks are pretty similar across the board. This is because most lines are based on the same model that the oddsmakers in Vegas have used for a long time. Until recently, sports betting was only legal in Las Vegas and the oddsmakers there mastered the craft of creating lines. They do a pretty good job of setting lines, so other sportsbooks use theirs as a template.

The main difference between the Vegas odds and the odds on local sportsbooks would be odds for the local team. Some sportsbooks want to limit their exposure and risk on the home team, so they might shave lines to get more action against the local teams like the Flyers.

Flyers live betting

If you’ve missed puck-drop, it’s not too late to get in on the action. Top sportsbooks have invested heavily in making sure live betting is as easy as pre-game betting.

Live betting entails betting on a game that is currently ongoing, with the odds having been adjusted for what has already happened in the game. If the first period had 3 goals scored in it, the live over/under might now be 7.5 compared to the pregame line of 5.5. If the team that was favored to win pre-game gives up the first goal, they might be a live underdog.

Not overreacting to what has happened leads to opportunities for profitable live betting. Remember, oddsmakers are very often completely wrong. If a line has moved a tremendous amount from what it was before the game, bet on the results to regress closer to what was expected before the game.

Flyers prop betting

Just like other sports, hockey offers plenty of props to bet on. A prop bet is a bet on something to occur within the game. Some examples of hockey props include:

  • Period betting: Who will win the first period? Will the second period go over or under 1.5 goals? If you only have time to watch a period of the game, this is a great way to get invested.
  • First player to score: Who do you think will score the first goal of the game? With this outcome being relatively random, payouts can be large. Even the best scorers in the game have odds over +500, while some lesser players can have payouts as high as 30-1.
  • Will the game go to overtime?: If you’re expecting a close game, you can bet on the game to go to overtime. Over 23% of NHL games go to overtime, so if you can pick the right spot, you can get odds near 3-1 on ‘yes’

With a vast amount of head-coaching experience, Therrien is an asset to Vigneault.

Assistant coach: Mike Yeo

Mike Yeo is another former NHL head coach who finds himself as an assistant on the Flyers coaching staff. Yeo coached the Minnesota Wild from 2011 through 2016. He then coached the St. Louis Blues from February 2017 through November 2018. He was fired, and then the Blues went on to win the Stanley Cup later that season.

Brief Flyers history

The Philadelphia Flyers were founded by Ed Snider in 1967, and he owned part of the team until he died in 2016. Comcast, now owns 100% of the team.

The Flyers were the first expansion team in the post-Original Six era to win the Stanley Cup. The most infamous era in Flyers hockey was the “Broad Street Bullies” era which resulted in two Stanley Cups. The reason for the nickname is because of the physical, in-your-face style those teams played, led by Bobby Clarke. Those teams got into a lot of fights, they played borderline dirty hockey, but they won games.

Since then, the Flyers have been a solid team but have yet to get over the hump of winning a Championship. Young talent such as Travis Konecny, Carter Hart, and Sean Couturier hope to lead this team to the promised land.

Below is a list of the Flyers all-time leaders in some key categories:

  • Games: Played: Bobby Clarke (1144)
  • Goals: Bill Barber (420)
  • Assists: Bobby Clarke (852)
  • Points: Bobby Clarke (1210)
  • Wins: Ron Hextall (240)
  • Saves: Bernie Parent (12,679)
